What we collect
Reading the site. Pages are static and we do not require an account. Our hosting infrastructure records ordinary technical information when a page is served, such as the request, the time, the address it came from and the browser identifier sent by your software. This is standard server logging and it exists for security and reliability.
Writing to us. If you email the newsroom we receive your address, your message and anything you attach. We use it to answer you and to check any correction you send.
Using a form on the site. Where a page offers a call to action, submitting it passes the details you type to the operator of that form, which is a third party and not this publisher. What they collect, and the terms on which they hold it, is governed by their own privacy notice, and we encourage you to read it before you type anything into their fields.
Measurement and advertising. The site may use analytics and advertising technologies that set identifiers in your browser in order to count visits and attribute referrals. Where your jurisdiction requires consent before such technologies run, you will be asked for it, and you can withdraw that consent through your browser settings at any time.
Why we may process it
To deliver and secure the website, to answer correspondence, to understand in aggregate which pages are read, and to account for referrals to commercial partners. Where the law requires a legal basis we rely on legitimate interests for operating and securing the site, consent for optional measurement and advertising technologies, and the necessity of processing your message in order to reply to it.
Sharing
We do not sell personal data. It is shared only with the service providers who make the site work, such as hosting, email and, if you submit one, the operator of a form. Those providers may process data outside your country, in which case the transfer relies on the safeguards their own terms set out. We may also disclose information where a law or a valid legal order requires it.
Retention
Server logs are kept for a short operational period and then discarded. Correspondence is kept while it is useful to the file, which for a correction means for as long as the brief it concerns remains published, so that we can show why a page says what it says.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection and portability, and a right to complain to your data protection authority. Write to [email protected] and we will respond within the period your law allows. Ask us in the same message if you want to know whether we hold anything at all about you, which for most readers of a static site is very little.
Children
The site is intended for adults and is not directed at anyone under eighteen. We do not knowingly collect information from children, and if you believe we have, tell us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes we update the date at the top of the page. Substantive changes will be described rather than slipped in, because a privacy notice that quietly rewrites itself is not a notice.
